The 22nd of July, 2022 was another inspiring moment for stroke survivors at the recently concluded SSSRCN programme which holds once every two months.
Stroke survivors, their relatives, and guardians gradually arrived in twos, threes, and more till the auditorium was filled. Members of the Support Club, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other members of the stroke management multidisciplinary team were present at the event. The hosts ensured everyone checked their vital signs before settling into the receiving area which was the Physiotherapy Department’s Gymnasium Complex at FMC Abeokuta.
The event kickstarted with the anchor, Adekunle Kolawole (PT) sectioning stroke survivors into mini groups where they would engage their senses in recreational activities like Ludo game and WHOT. This is a first from SSSRCN at the bi-monthly meetings. Nevertheless, SSSRCN is known to always awe its guests with fresh and innovative ideas.
The anchor of the event introduced the Guest speakers in persons of Mr. Ayansola and Mr. Sanusi, who are clinical psychologists, and the other officiating SSSRCN members.
Topic of the day: Substance Abuse in Stroke Survivors
Mr. Sanusi, a clinical psychologist, took to the stage to deliver a talk centered on “Substance Abuse.” He started by explaining what substance abuse is all about to the audience. He smoothly flowed into the causes and effects of substance abuse. Emphasizing more on the effects, he spoke about the detriments of substance abuse on individuals; some of which include alteration in reasoning, talking and perception of things, and alteration of a person’s daily activities. He also mentioned that substance abuse can cause another form of stroke, depression, and/or suicide attempt in a stroke survivor.
What kinds of substances?
Some examples of hard drugs highlighted during the presentation include cocaine, cannabis, and codeine. He further stated that some orthodox medications like herbs and kola nut can also be misused and abused. He advised and encouraged that the doctor’s prescription should be followed strictly by everyone.
The stages of coming out of substance abuse as highlighted by the speaker
- Withdrawal method
- Maintenance
- Relapse
- Rehabilitation
The psychologist expert went on to explain that maintenance is how a person who has fled drug abuse can maintain his/her new status. He underscored that the withdrawal method is the most difficult for drug abusers because they find it difficult to quit. However, they can be helped through rehabilitation where they are involved in all forms of exercise and recreational activities.
The succinct talk was followed by the questions and answers session. The officials moderated the session as the clinical psychologists shed light on their grey curiosities.
Everyone in attendance was entertained and the programme came to a close by 10:33 am.
SSSRCN is indeed impacting lives
